On November, 22nd, I visited Irvine Spectrum Center during the evening time. To begin with, I noticed the design of the lighting for this store to be successful. It immediately drew my attention with the warm invitation into the space. The glow of the red color portrays a strong emotion, and it's visually clear from a distance. The lantern style of the lighting right at the entrance establishes a soft intensity. When you walk into the store, the interior lighting welcomes you into the walkway, whil emphasizing the store's identity. The distinction between the lantern lighting outside and the bright light interior creates a warm atmosphere. I'm learning once again how lighting can change or influence how we perceive the surrounding.
I took this photo right infront of target inside the Spectrum Mall. I find this lighting structure and design to be unsuccessful because the lighting at the entrance is much less effective in creating a welcoming environment. Besides the logo and its color of the store which is illiuminated with red, the surrounding lightings doesn't support the overall experience. I perceived the the illumination of the logo is too bright, while it lacks in highlighting key features. If you look at closely of the photo, the lights are mainly surrounding the trees which creates a different atmosphere. However, this string lights compete with the storefront logo which is bright in red color. Since the entrance of the store relies a lot from the interior lighting projecting outward, the transition between outside near the trees to the entrance creates a disruption.
This photo symbolizes the overall lighting environment of the Spectrum walkway. It's visually immersive, and the lighting on the side creates a warm invitation to the space. I perceived the lighting near the palms trees create a glowing pathway. The lighting is successful in balancing the brightness throughout the walkway section and the ground remains dim while the side lighting mainly provides the illumination, making the environment feel intimate. I appreciate the the storefronts on the side contribute their subtle lighting, while not overpowering it. This combination of landscape and architectural lighting makes a cohesive night environment, and I was pleased with what I was observing.

Thank you for your detailed post. I am so glad you are noticing light more in your daily life :). Great observances on how light should welcome us in and how the Target entrance does not do that. Nice job,
ReplyDeleteHi David! Thank you for sharing your findings! I wasn’t able to go to the spectrum at night time however looking at your post I can see how nice it is in both lighting and atmosphere! I love the way you described the visually immersive lighting that creates a warm invitation to the sixth. I feel the same way at the Irvine spectrum and in my post that even mentioned about the lights leading you to the walkway to shop! I love this, and it’s interesting that some pathways are more lit than others depending on if it’s a main walking path or not!
