Week 8// Site Specific Post- Cierra Torres

Unfortunately i was not able to visit spectrum in the night time/dark, However i have found the good and not so good about lighting at the spectrum in the Day time…. But none the less here are my observations! First picture is overall environment- Now there are no active lights on in this photo, but i wanted to hone in on the shadows being created on top of this store. It reminds me of when we make sure the lights are angled correctly in class, the bottom of the planters and palm tree has shadows creeping up it. I also noticed there are lighting fixtures, situated by the door of the store as well as on top of the palm tree and at the other entrance of the door. I can imagine at night time this nicely guides, clients, and shoppers, hopefully to their store and assist in illuminating the way to shop! I also really enjoyed the details of architecture in this building. These swirls make little hearts at the top and trim the building nicely.  One store that is successful in lighting- Am...

Week 8 | Site Specific Post: David Cha

On November, 22nd, I visited Irvine Spectrum Center during the evening time. To begin with, I noticed the design of the lighting for this store to be successful.  It immediately drew my attention with the warm invitation into the space. The glow of the red color portrays a strong emotion, and it's visually clear from a distance. The lantern style of the lighting right at the entrance establishes a soft intensity. When you walk into the store, the interior lighting welcomes you into the walkway, whil emphasizing the store's identity. The distinction between the lantern lighting outside and the bright light interior creates a warm atmosphere. I'm learning once again how lighting can change or influence how we perceive the surrounding. I took this photo right infront of target inside the Spectrum Mall. I find this lighting structure and design to be unsuccessful because the lighting at the entrance is much less effective in creating a welcoming environment. Besides the logo a...

Week 8 // Site Specific // Alexis Morris

I visited the Irvine Spectrum, which is currently set up for the holiday season. The overall space is designed to entice patrons, and convince them that the various wares are of high quality and worth buying. The addition of the holiday lights and ornament gates further establishes the "buying" mood as it implies the layer of "holiday" shopping. I think the designers successfully set up an environment that primes visitors for purchasing.    The first specific store I choose to talk about is the Nike store. While the design isn't abysmal, I did not like it. I am not a fan of cold "white" light, and the lighting used in this store was almost entirely cold, unnatural tones of white. The exception being the three globes in the center which were warm tones but, against the surrounding lights, come off as an almost sickly yellow. The overall composition felt disjointed and off putting, and I think Nike should be glad it's such a well established brand....

Week 8/Site Specific - Ashley

The site that I visited was the Irvine Spectrum. This first photo showcases the overall feeling of the place. There are warm-toned Christmas lights lining the trees and lamps, and a large lit-up present in frame. The warm-toned lights are very welcoming and invoke feelings of joy and excitement for the holidays. This photo makes the space look dark, but in reality it was just the right amount of bright holiday cheer.  This second photo is from the restaurant Javier's. Although I didn't go into the space, I was drawn to the outside area immediately by the cohesiveness of the space. The off-white wall color, warm light coming from the hanging bulbs and candles on the tables, made the space feel cozy and private. It is definitely a more high end restaurant and I think the lighting emphasized that just the right amount.  This last photo is from the store edikted. edikted is a fast-fashion, micro-trend heavy, catered to the younger generation clothing store. I have been insi...

Week 8 - Site specific - Haihua Chiang

I visited Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga after dark, and the space felt instantly festive. Warm string lights framed the walkways, trees were wrapped in white and blue lights, and the small stream reflected everything beautifully. The designers clearly aimed to create a cozy holiday atmosphere that invites people to linger and shop.  The lighting colors were a little uneven at times, but together they still formed a beautiful, festive environment. Overall, the space felt welcoming and captured the spirit of the season. This jewelry store caught my eye immediately. From afar, the lighting looked warm and golden, drawing me in. Up close, the interior read more white, likely reflecting off the pale wood floors. Despite the shift in tone, the lighting felt soft, simple, and elegant.  The store’s minimal and refined theme is supported well by the lighting. It highlights the jewelry gently and creates a calm, comfortable shopping experience. In this case, the lighting c...

Week 8 Site specific: Tyra Logan

I visited Irvine Spectrum for this week's blog. In the first picture it shows the overall environment of the shopping mall. The mall is decorated with Christmas decor with lights that illuminate the long walkway with access to all of the stores and restaurants. I think the designers were trying to achieve bringing the holiday spirit which would make people want to buy things for the holiday season. Also, having additional lighting makes the mall more inviting and family friendly for people to want to spend a lot of time in the area.  The second image is of a restaurant in the spectrum. The overall theme was dimmed warm tone lighting. I think this restaurant was trying to go for an intimate cozy feeling but I think using the light in this way failed. The intensity of the lighting made it hard to see whats even through the windows. Normally people would look through the windows of a restaurant or store to see if its worth going into. If you are not able to see you are more lik...

Week 8- Sabrina Huang

I visited the Irvine Spectrum after dark, and these are the pictures I captured during my visit.  The first store I observed was Blackdot, which is a coffee shop. The lighting in the space matched the overall minimalist environment of the shop and aligned well with their simple and lean logo design. However, I felt it was a bit too dark. I would have preferred either brighter lighting or a bit more variety. The second store, Brandy, gives off a very relaxed, cozy clothing-store vibe. I think the lighting successfully matches the aesthetic they were aiming for. I especially liked the use of fairy lights; they complement the brand’s style and nicely with the wooden floors. Lastly, I included a photo of the Christmas tree at the Spectrum because the colors looked especially beautiful at night. I loved how the lights slowly alternated colors over time; it added a sense of excitement and made the environment feel festive and lively. CHRISTMASSS!!!

WEEK 8- SITE SPECIFIC- RAMIN ZAMANI

Here I have my 3 photos from the Irvine Spectrum for the week 8 blog. The top one is the overall photo prompt. I really liked this spot because it showcased the Christmas tree from far away but also the palm trees in the distance. The layout and placement of the trees really attracts someone in but I also thing the palm trees being lit up attracts people into the Christmas tree as well. The second photo I have is the lighting that I didn't think was the best. This was at blk dot coffee. I thought the lighting brought a weird vibe into the coffee shop. I don't think they needed more lighting I just think it could be different. I will say the structure they have is really cool, I just don't like the light it omits. The bottom and last picture was at dizzy bird which was at a Lebanese food spot (shoutout Lebanon). I really liked the lighting in this spot and maybe I am biased because my favorite color is pink. I think the structure were cool, the way they were hanging but I ...

Week 8- site specific - Kaylee Kollins

The location I went to was the Irvine spectrum. The first photo I chose to take, was of the water surrounded by lit trees. Is the ambiance nice? Yes. Is the water lit well? No. I would imagine this is a big photo opportunity area, and it is not lit well in the evening. The area surrounding it was what was lighting the area. There were many trees around wrapped in lights that actually photograph well. The back lighting of the Apple Store behind could either work in your favor, or against you. The next photo of the store H&M. I thought that the lighting in here was great. The lighting sculpture above was quite beautiful as well. The only downside I have about this lighting is a personal note. When places are lit with cool undertones, they can give me headaches. I find warmer lighting to be easier on my eyes. The last space is a store called Brandy Melville. Although it is one of my favorite stores, it does not have the best lighting. The warm toned ground clashing with the cool...

Week 6: Movement. David Cha "Stillness and Subtle Motion"

I captured this photo in my room at night time. The purple glow relaxes the atmosphere and fills the space with a joyful mood. I noticed even in a quiet room, the light seems to be alive. It reflects my movement through the shadow on the wall, while creating its own motion. This is a safe space where I stretch, plan, and create where new inspirations emerge. It reminded me that movement doesn't always have to be physical, rather it's about how the light and color travel through the space, shaping how I feel, think, and move. The relaxation that the lighting provides (especially purple/lavender color) in my room affects my mood and gives new ideas. These inspirations are always creating and moving inside my mind.

Week 6 // Movement // Alexis Morris

This week's prompt is movement. I feel like there is no better representation of light and movement than flames. I attended a bonfire event this weekend and was transfixed with the way the flames were in constant motion. The way the light flickered and changed not only with the movement of the flames but with the direction of the wind and which sides of the fire pit people were standing on as well. I especially found the way the glow of the embers shifted and changed to be entrancing.  I find it interesting that all of our natural occurring sources of light are in constant shift -- the sun, moon, and stars traveling across the sky, the way flames are never stagnant, the reflection of light off of the surface of a pond or river-- we did not evolve alongside static light.

Week 6/Movement - Ashley Cook

This image is from the pool in my apartment at night. The blue of the water is contrasted with the orange from the streetlights that are illuminating the small folds and ripples in the water. The orange lines enhance the movement in the water, and although you can't tell in this photo, they move constantly and quite quickly as the water is disturbed by wind, debris, bugs, and I. I love the combination of the orange and bright blue together, even though they seem like they wouldn't go well typically, I think it provided for a visually stunning photo.

Week 6: Movement Tyra Logan

For this week's blog I have included a picture from Corona Del Mar, specifically for the movement seen through the ocean waves. In the middle of the picture you can see a wave rippling across the sand. It is hard to tell from the dark night skies but the water is also receding back resembling a low tide. You can see light coming from the beach houses on the cliff towards the left side of the image. The light is reflecting on the water also showing a rippling effect on top of the clear water. It also looks like light beams reaching towards the edge of the water. The light is illuminated in the horizon and gets darker towards the edges of the picture, it almost looks like youre looking through a camera lens.

Week 6- Cierra Torres Movement

This Friday I went to my First Playground LA Class, Heels! This is a Dance studio in LA that is an iconic spot on Melrose, you see the “PLAY” letters and automatically know. I have always wanted to take classes here and my friend finally made us take the 2 hour traffic filled drive, and we took two classes, 6-7:30pm and 9-10pm.  It is one Large Studio filled with reds, from above lights, and lights above the speakers as seen in the Left of this photo. I make sure to take a moment of gratitude when i do something little Cierra always wanted to do, and in these red lights, i noticed all the other people in the room and how their bodies welcomed the warmth of the red and how their movement was informed by the red, shadowing over every move. For example, in this photo the white top has red slowly creeping over their shoulder as they’re about to walk in the center of the room, take their space and dance. Since these classes were heels, the red helped me feel the  feelings of connec...

Week 6- Sabrina Huang

I took this picture when I went to Disneyland. This was Buzz lightyear on the "Paint the Night" parade. The whole parade is based on lights and I found it really cool that there was what seems to be LED lights all around the slinky part of the dog from toy story. Then there were lights from under surrounded the dog and buzz as the parade kept moving along. The lighting really came to life because it was dark at night and it felt very nostalgic to watch. Made younger me happy!

Week 6- Movement - Haihua Chiang

This photo was taken during a rehearsal for a dance project   I was involved in, held in the dance studio at  Loyola Marymount University .  I was drawn to how natural light filtered through the large studio windows, softly tracing the dancers’ movements. The afternoon sun created a quiet rhythm across the floor, its shifting patterns almost choreographed by time itself. Watching the dancers explore movement in this shared space reminded me how lighting can shape the atmosphere of creation. Even without stage lights, the interplay of sunlight and shadow framed each gesture with intention. It was a reminder that movement and light are inseparable that each responding to the other in an evolving dialogue.

Movement/Ramin Zamani/Week 6

For this week's submission I have a photo that I took on Monday night before Cierra's rehearsal for New Slate. This is the view from the third level in the Mesa parking structure. I always forget there is a baseball field next to the parking structure and always get surprised to see it. I wasn't planning on watching the sunset but as I walked back to my car I noticed a lot of the sky had been in pink and had to take a look. You can't tell much in this photo though because sunsets pass so quickly. I thought it was a perfect picture for our movement blog. The lighting in this sunset reminds me of layers of a cake because it's different in each part and I think each part is equally beautiful. I absolutely love the pinks, peaches, blues, and purples in the sky and clouds. I stood there and soaked in as much of the sunset as I could before it said goodbye. I think it's a beautiful representation of staying present since sunsets and even sunrises tend to move so bris...

Week 6- Movement- Kaylee Kollins

For this weeks blog, the prompt is movement. I snapped this photo this week after my weekly run at the back bay loop in Newport. As we know, clouds move slowly, but in this photo, it is not clear in which direction they are moving. The different textures of the clouds could indicate which direction the clouds are going, but I enjoy that it is up to your imagination to guess that. There are some pockets of light in this photograph, where the clouds are less saturated. This adds to the overall texture of the clouds. Due to the fact it was overcast, the lighting was dim and moody, but I still believe that the subtleness of the light shining through captures the essence of the clouds moving, even though this is just a photo. This was a windy day, so if you look closely, there may be some indications of the greenery shifting in one direction. I like to imagine that the clouds were shifting to the left, with the lighting coming down to the left diagonal, with the wind blowing to the le...
