Week 10- Cierra Torres

How is it week 10 already!? WHAT!!

This photo is from New Slate Tech, i love the  spot light used and the Ring made around them, mimicking their round wide brim hats. Making the focal point of the stage nd this photo, these amazing dancers! The cyc is warm with red at the base and dimming and fading into a darker red the further you travel up towards the lights. For the Sow dancers wore white shirts and in this photo my dancers are wearing black shirts I notice a difference in lighting without the white shirts since the white will take on any color that is placed upon it! Warm red shins highlight form from stage left. From stage right we have purple shins filling in more form and adding dimension to the body and shapes. This picture specifically embodies the color of “feel good” it make slow down and take a deep breath, almost as if the dimness of the lights inspire the calmness of my breath and movement! The Shadows created on the ground make for an interesting addition in the composition of the photo as well!

The main thing i learned in. This class is to be able to back up my wants/ intentions. I wanted this this way because _____, this informs _______, the music ______. There are so many ways about it but as long as i can talk it through i am good. The other thing is you said in class the other day something along the lines of the lighting designers are here to make your choreography come alive. We want to make your piece, your piece, but as Choreographers you have to communicate it nicely and well. Once I heard you frame it this way it immediately clicked, and I realized that the lighting designers are just as human as we are and leading with, Grace is always first.

I can not believe this class is over and. I wanted to say thank you! Thank you for treating us with respect and encouraging our curiosity without making us feel dumb! This is NOT easy and you guys make it look easy!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, time and energy with us! I don’t think i can create anymore without lighting being apart of my creation process! And Mac thank you for always stepping in and being an amazing ta for us! I am sending all the best and Happy Holidays!!

  1. Thank you for much for your trust in us as I have to throw you in to it quickly but I was so happy with the outcome from all of you. Your realizations coupled with your description of the what the lighting is doing means you will have some many wonderful collaborations in the future. Thank you for your kind words and all your work in class!

Dance 287 - Blog Instructions and Purpose

As artists, we see the world in unique ways, and we all draw inspiration from our surroundings. These blog posts are designed to help you see lighting differently—deepening your appreciation for light in daily life and broadening your artistic vision. They will help you develop an eye for light, not only in theatre, but also in the everyday moments around you. To better understand how light can influence an audience’s perception, we must first explore how it shapes our own perception day to day. Throughout the quarter, I hope this blog will encourage you to discover light in ways you may not have noticed before. You’ll begin to see colors you’ve overlooked, recognize the angle of a particular light, and learn to articulate how light makes you feel. To support this process, I’ve created a space for each of you to contribute a short entry every other week on an aspect of light you’ve observed during your experiences. This could be a striking sunset, the energy of a rock concert, the desi...

Week 0 - Mac McDermott - Sample Post

Hello! My name is Mac McDermott. I will be the TA for Dance 287 this quarter. For my post this week, I chose a photo that I took in the Guadalupe Mountains in Texas. I chose this image because of the shadow. Despite being overcast, plenty of light is visible, and the glow gave an ominous warning (which led to running two miles through hail) The layers of clouds cast these deep ever changing shadows across the mountain range. One of the defining traits of my lighting designs is my use of shadow to tell a story.

Week 2, Kaylee Kollins, Tokyo Nights

For week 1, I have chosen a photo I took this summer, in the streets of Tokyo in the night time. I spend most of my summers here, so looking back at this photo gives me a sense of nostalgia, happiness, and warmth. My favorite part of this photo is that although my iPhone camera quality is not great, it captures the light rays of the street light going in many different directions. The light splitting off in different directions yet remaining symmetrical to me is an art within itself. Another thing that sticks out to me is how the vending machine light glows in this photo. There is nothing more comforting than walking the streets of Tokyo at night and having a vending machine light glare at you in the distance. To me, this photo exudes peace and serenity, as I feel very comfortable walking these streets at night in the town I grew up in, but I cannot say the same about walking the streets at night in America. Another highlight of light in this photo is the entryway to some people's...
